Margin Calculator
Where a margin account stands right now: what it holds, what it owes, how much equity is left, and how far your investments can fall before a margin call. Then try one change — invest some of the cash, take some out, or move the market — and see both sides at once.
Your position
Both requirements are your broker's rates, and only your broker can tell you them — they are the two most consequential numbers here, so this calculator does not guess at either. CIRO's published figures are minimums: a broker may require more, and the rate is set per security and depends on that security's price, so one pair of rates cannot describe a mixed portfolio exactly. CIRO's rules prescribe one continuously-maintained minimum margin per position; the split into an initial and a maintenance rate is ordinary broker practice, not a regulatory structure.
Try one change (optional)
One change at a time — each is measured against your position as entered above, not against another scenario.
Fill in initial deposit, amount invested, margin loan (amount borrowed), initial margin requirement, maintenance margin requirement to see your position.
What this calculator does not do
- No interest cost. A margin loan is not free, and none of the figures above charge you for it.
- No projection over time. Every figure is point-in-time — today's position, and the single change you asked about.
- One pair of requirement rates for the whole position. Real requirements are set per security and depend on the price, so a portfolio holding securities in different margin classes cannot be modelled exactly here.
